Painting the Nursery!

Painting the Nursery!

Some quick updates: we made a youtube channel for our blog! There are little things that we get to enjoy here at the MinIsland everyday, and we thought you might like to enjoy them, too! We will be linking the occasional video to our blog post for you to click on, and it should take you to the video. Otherwise, you can visit our channel, OfWoodandEarth, on youtube.

Another update, we ended up buying a new car! Turns out that our Ford Escape '13 won't fit our baby seat. We had heard from several people that this was the case, but we were hopeful that our carseat would be an exception. We've been needing a new car for over a year because my Ford Escape '04 has some major issues with it, including some airbags that aren't functioning properly. God was merciful and helped us to find the most PERFECT car for us. It's a Toyota Sequoia '08, and it will fit up to eight people. Here's hoping that our new family car will last us for many, many years to come! Oh, and here's a really funny picture of Sam trying to fit into the Ford Escape '13 when we scooted the front seats forward enough for the carseat to fit.

On Saturday, we installed the deck handrails, and they look fantastic. Sam did an amazing job with the finish. Those rails are as smooth as butter and are just asking to be leaned on. I'm sure we will spend many evenings looking off the deck and enjoying the view.

Rose thought the handrails looked great, too. Or she just stopped by for a pet.

My mom came up for the weekend to help Sam and I paint the nursery. The renters who lived here before we bought our house allowed their grandchildren to choose the room colors, and they chose very bright green and purple!

We ended up repainting one wall navy and the other three walls grey. Then, we lightened mixed leftover navy paint with some other paint samples we had to create a slightly lighter blue color. Mom and I sponged these lighter blue over the navy to create a faux finish that resembled the night sky. Then, because Rylee is due in the winter (and because those particular constellations are my favorite) we looked up the pattern and the relative position of several constellations (big dipper, little dipper, Orion, Queen Cassiopeia's crown, Queen Cephas' thrown, and the seven sisters). We cut star shapes out of kitchen sponges and sponged the constellations on the wall.

Then, using two different colors of grey we filled in around the constellations. Lastly, Mom and I used a yardstick and a ruler to draw connecting lines with a washable grey marker. We painted over these lines with a q-tip in the lighter blue paint that we used for the faux finish.

The baby's room turned out amazing, and Mom and I were so proud of ourselves and our spontaneous creativity. It turned out so much better than we could have hoped for.

We spent a good deal of time last night just sitting in the nursery in joyful anticipation of our soon-to-be-arriving little girl!

(I love my boys.)
